Golf Simulator Room Size Calculator

Not sure if your basement, garage, or spare room can fit a golf simulator? Enter your room’s ceiling height, width, and depth, plus the height of the tallest golfer who will use it. The calculator checks each dimension, tells you where your ball should sit, and estimates the largest impact screen your room can hold.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator checks your room against three dimensions, in order of importance. Ceiling height comes first because it is the hardest to change, then depth, then width.

Ceiling Height

At the top of a driver swing, the clubhead rises roughly 3 to 4 feet above the golfer’s head. So the calculator adds 3 feet to the tallest golfer’s height for the minimum, and 4 feet for a comfortable swing. It then subtracts the thickness of your hitting mat or platform, since every inch you stand on is an inch less overhead.

Room Depth

Depth is the sum of three parts: about 1 foot of gap behind the impact screen, 8 to 10 feet between the ball and the screen, and enough space behind the ball for your swing. Radar launch monitors need the most depth, because they sit roughly 6 to 8 feet behind the ball. Camera-based units that sit beside the ball, or overhead units mounted on the ceiling, need much less.

Room Width

If only right-handed or only left-handed golfers will play, you can offset the hitting position and get by with less width. If both will use the simulator, the tee needs to sit in the center, which takes a wider room.

Tips for Measuring Your Room

  • Measure the lowest point. Ductwork, beams, light fixtures, and garage door tracks all reduce your usable ceiling height.
  • Measure where you will actually stand. Ceilings are not always level, especially in basements and garages.
  • Plan for the tallest golfer. If a 6 ft 3 in friend will visit, size the room for them.
  • Do a test swing. Before you buy anything, take a slow, full swing with your driver in the exact spot where you plan to hit.
